LOHAS: A necessity rather than a choic

The 2nd International LOHAS Forum – CHINA will be held in Beijing on December 12th-13th 2009. LOHAS is an acronym for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, and is centered on the principles of health, better living, and eco-friendliness.

Our Forum aims at allowing organizations and corporates with like-minded values to come together and share their LOHAS practices, learn from the efforts of others, create new synergies

, and share up-to-date knowledge and resources. Moreover, they will have the chance to discuss the latest LOHAS trends with leading experts, and to introduce themselves to a highly professional audience, so as to make their voice heard in the LOHAS international scene.

Appeared in China in 2005, LOHAS as a “healthy, happy, organic, ecological and sustainable life-style” is gaining rapid recognition as a popular trend for achieving an improved quality of life. Sharing a similar philosophy with Chinese culture, particularly the concepts of healthy life, emotional well-being, and sustainability, LOHAS has been applied by Chinese people in various areas including daily life, investment preferences, production and consumption. LOHAS-inspired communities, towns, supermarkets, companies, websites, clubs, and magazines have all appeared in China.

Our forum is centered on LOHAS in its multiple dimensions. It will develop around different sessions each focused on a specific topic, such as eco-living and green building, renewable energy solutions, socially responsible investing, alternative healthcare, organic clothing and food, high-touch industry, personal development, and eco-tourism. In addition, participants will have the chance to listen to prominent LOHAS speakers, as well as to have a taste of living the LOHAS lifestyle! Experiences will include breathing meditation with the professional trainer Subodhi from Indian Puna Retreat Center; discover the secrets of longevity enclosed in China’s ancient traditions Wu yin and Wu xing shared by the international expert of longevity Mr. Zhang Mingliang; enjoy the taiji and yoga performances given by the famous yoga trainer Ms LinMin; and much much more!

The second international LOHAS forum is China’s first high-end professional forum that features “LOHAS development” and “LOHAS industry” as its theme. This forum will see the participation of LOHAS experts and leaders from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, America and Europe. They will come to share the latest information on the LOHAS development in China and abroad, the future of the LOHAS sector, changes in the LOHAS market and consumer trends, therefore making the Forum the most authoritative conference about LOHAS in China.
The speakers invited to participate in this forum include:

Topic: “LOHAS in USA, the International LOHAS industry, and Opportunities & Challenges for China”
Mr Ted Ning is the Executive Director of the LOHAS Conference, Executive Editor of the LOHAS Journal and www.lohas.com. A growing consciousness on health and environmentalism is leading to a stronger desire for companies and individuals to align themselves with LOHAS values to benefit from a deeper meaning to sustainable practices. Today, LOHAS describes an estimated $209 billion U.S. marketplace for goods and services focused on health, the environment, social justice, personal development and sustainable living. Doing so he is able to provide cohesive perspectives about how responsible business practice should be presented and branded to the consumer. Furthermore, he can provide case study examples of companies that have transformed their business operations to become ‘green’ which have resulted in profitability and healthier work environments. Ted has been with LOHAS for 7 years and has been invited to speak internationally about the market to Universities, private and public companies and business conferences. Topic: “CHINA SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL ASSOCIATION: LOHAS Tourism—Sustainable Travel”
The China Sustainable Travel Association was founded in 2009, in an attempt to lead the Chinese travel and event industry into compliance with the sustainable guidelines set forth by various internationally recognized authorities.
At present, there are numerous international organizations promoting the general process involved in transforming the travel trade into a sustainable industry.  However, in China, there exist only few organizations that are working to mobilize the industry into compliance. The CSTA is a not-for-profit, member organization, which intends to fill this void by acting as a unified front in the promotion of sustainable events and travel principles.
The CSTA’s mission is to educate, engage, and evaluate, which is internally referred to as “The 3 E’s.” The CSTA acts in accordance to the suggestions provided by its advisory board, which is comprised of international and local experts in the travel and sustainability fields.
IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare),
Topic: “Animal welfare and Animal-human connection” (TBC)
From the outset, the founders of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, or IFAW, rejected the notion that the interests of humans and animals were separate. Instead they embraced the understanding that the fate and future of harp seals-and all other animals on Earth-are inextricably linked to our own.
IFAW’s courageous actions drew international attention to the plight of the seal pups and successfully rallied worldwide condemnation of their hunt. Thanks to IFAW’s continued vigilance, it is now illegal to hunt white coat seal pups for commercial purposes on the ice floes off Canada’s east coast. This is a fragile victory, however, for Canada’s commercial seal hunt persists. IFAW continues to document and expose abuses of the commercial hunt and press for an end to this cruel, unsustainable slaughter. Over the years, the small team of committed campaigners reaching out to help seals has grown to become the world’s leading international animal welfare organization. IFAW begins its fourth decade of operation with more than 200 experienced campaigners, legal and political experts, and internationally acclaimed scientists working from offices in 17 countries around the world.
IFAW has today 1.2 million supporters worldwide. This broad supporting base makes it possible for IFAW to engage communities, government leaders, and like-minded organizations around the world and achieve lasting solutions to pressing animal welfare and conservation challenges-solutions that benefit both animals and people. Over the years, our approach has been as varied as the species we protect.
