Background of International LOHAS Forum
Concept: LOHAS Industry and LOHAS Market
LOHAS – lifestyles of health and sustainability
It is the most buzzed word in today’s world, a simple concept conveying people’s most updated understanding of life. LOHAS is a lifestyle mode that was first conceptualized in 1998 by American Sociologist Paul Ray. It is a market segment that is rapidly growing in popularity in the USA,
Western Europe, South East Asia, and progressive Asian countries (Japan, Singapore and Taiwan) and is related to sustainable living, “green” ecological initiatives, and generally composed of a relatively upscale and well-educated population segment. This movement is actually driven by two forces: LOHAS companies practice “responsible capitalism” by providing goods and services using economic and environmentally sustainable business practices. LOHAS business owners and industry leaders from around the world meet each year at the LOHAS Conference to discuss industry trends, share ideas and learn how to run a successful LOHAS business. LOHAS consumers, sometimes referred to as Lohasians, are interested in products covering a wide range of market sectors and sub-sectors, including green building supplies, socially responsible investing and “green stocks”, alternative healthcare, organic clothing and food, personal development media, yoga and other fitness products, eco-tourism and more.2 The focus
is on personal development, with the ultimate goal of achieving one’s full human potential, and is of the upmost concern to the LOHAS consumer.
